What the Future Holds: Dynamics NAV Statement of Direction

The most common questions we are asked about Microsoft Dynamics NAV center around the future plans for the product. The best place to search for these answers is in the Statement of Direction document for Microsoft Dynamics NAV, which was recently updated.

The Statement of Direction gives an overview of the future plans and product roadmap from 2009-2017. This will help you stay more informed about your solution so you can plan accordingly. The document is primarily focused on the next major release, Microsoft Dynamics® NAV "7", and provides a general outline for items planned in Microsoft Dynamics NAV "8" and "9". Here are some of the highlights.

Microsoft will continue to focus on five basic principles as the company adds new functionality to Dynamics NAV:

  1. Simplicity
  2. Productivity
  3. User Experience Leadership
  4. Continuous advantage by leveraging Microsoft Technology
  5. Rapid Time to Value (ROI)

Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Service Pack 1, Scheduled Release in Q3 2009
Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 Service Pack 1 (SP1) builds on all the innovations that were introduced with Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009. It will help productivity for customers and partners. Upgrades to the new RoleTailored user experience will be easier for customers working on previous versions of Microsoft Dynamics NAV. In addition, SP1 will add the innovative Client Extensibility for both existing and new customers.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV “7” 2010-2011
Microsoft will maintain the innovative RoleTailored approach. The enhanced interoperability of Microsoft Office and SharePoint will enable more users to be more productive. Furthermore, the Software + Services approach using Dynamics Online will allow Microsoft Partners to develop their own services by using Microsoft’s Web Services. With this release, Microsoft expects to support Microsoft SQL Server only as a database platform.
