Alert – New Credit Card Security Standard May Affect Your Business

If credit cards are used to transact business payments in your organization, you need to be aware of new regulations being imposed this summer that will have a significant impact on your ability to conduct those transactions.

A new worldwide standard entitled Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS) has been created by the Payment Card Industry (PCI) and is being applied by most of the major credit card brands. This is being done in an effort to reduce the incidence of security breaches and fraud associated with the usage and storage of credit card numbers. This means that as a merchant, if you use or store credit card numbers in your business payment transactions, then you are going to be subject to PA-DSS compliance as of July 1, 2010. Even if you swipe credit cards manually and then hand key credit card numbers into your MAS 90 or MAS 200 system, you will still be subject to the PCI regulations.

Fortunately, Sage has a PA-DSS compliant credit card processing software solution available free of charge for a limited time. All you have to do is pay a low annual software maintenance fee. We don't know how much longer this fantastic offer will last, but our advice would be to jump on it while you can. The consequences of conducting non-PCI complaint payment transactions is that your merchant fees will likely increase dramatically initially, and ultimately the ability to accept credit card payments as a merchant will likely be suspended.
